Bear (November/December 1990)

Along with photo spreads of models Mike Kane and Joe Thomas and a showcase of hairy men from David Hurles' Old Reliable production company, the November/December 1990 issue of Bear also features Andy Mangels' article on the gradual rise of body and facial hair in comic books. As the writer explains, the medium's superheroes, while repeatedly depicted as hypermasculine powerhouses, were late to develop beards and chest hair, with these elements not emerging until the 1970s and 1980s through the persistent efforts of influential illustrators like John Byrne and the emergence of independent publishing firms.
