Colt Studios Calendar (1991)

Shortly after the Supreme Court decriminalized images of male nudity in 1967, Jim French and his partner Lou Thomas jumped at the homoerotic opportunity and formed Target Studios to showcase French’s photography, which he often released under the pseudonym of Rip Colt. Over time, Target melded with other companies to eventually become Colt Studios. Akin to its peers, Colt specialized in muscular men; however, unlike its counterparts, the studio used costumes to enhance their models’ masculinity, regularly depicting them partially clothed in the attire or bikers, cowboys, firemen, and police officers and allowing details like boots and Stetsons to complement their manliness. This 1991 leather calendar, in turn, is a demonstration of this technique, with the models clad in leather caps, chaps, and jackets that only reinforce the theme.
