Savage Male (July 1996), Part One

Despite an advertisement in the August 1994 issue of the popular music magazine Spin and spreads with models from Falcon and Hot House, Savage Male experienced a brief life, running from 1993 to 1997 and only releasing thirty issues. Like many of its peers, the publication offered erotic fiction, nude pictures, and video reviews. Unfortunately, its features did little to distinguish it from what, by the 1990s, became an overly inundated marketplace of homoerotic magazines and, like Heat and several other publications, it suffered an ephemeral existence. Broke into two parts, this July 1996 issue is an exemplification of this factor. In the first part, spreads of models Tom Chase, Reinaldo Medeiros, and Cliff Parker are accompanied by a Savage Tales cartoon.

Torso (July 1982)

Born in Natick, Massachusetts, in June of 1952, Andrew Robert Okun (later christened Al Parker by Rip Colt, the founder of Colt Studios and the discoverer of Okun's talent) would establish himself as one of the foremost actors, directors, and producers of homoeroticism. Showcased in numerous magazines and films, Okun reached legendary status during the 1970s and 1980s and, as Roger Edmonson attests in his biography on the man, still maintains a cult following decades after his death in 1992. Yet, the artist's life was not without complications: raped at knife-point at the age of fifteen, Okun's emotional trauma manifested itself in nymphomania and substance abuse, which strained his fourteen-year relationship with Richard Cole (who performed with his partner in videos under the name Steve Taylor) and lead to his contraction of HIV. This July 1982 issue of Torso features Okun at his prime, along with a spread titled "Fraternity Flesh," and advertisements for Target magazine, HIM's video Workout, and products by Marksman Production.

Advocate Classifieds (June 1994)

The oldest continuously published gay periodical still in existence within the United States, The Advocate widened its scope in the middle of the 1980s to include the homoerotic Advocate Men. In 1992, the publisher expanded again to offer Advocate Classifieds, a magazine released twice a month devoted primarily to classified ads for everything from casual connections to long-term relationships. In addition to its abundance of personals, the publication also featured interviews with adult entertainers and a single photo spread. In this June 1994 issue, photos of model Clint Benedict are accompanied by sexual advise on bisexuality, insider gossip on hazing in the adult industry, and the short story "The Men's Room" (about a contract negotiator's obsession with a mystery man who masturbates into the office urinals).
