Mandate (March 1983), Part Three

One of the elements which set Blueboy and Mandate apart from their heavy-hitting peers, namely Honcho and Playguy, was their inclusion of articles with intellectual sustenance. The March 1983 issue of Mandate, which centers around a nautical theme, offers that in abundance, including John D’Emilio’s exploration of McCarthyism and homosexuality in the first third of the publication. The final third, presented in this week's post, features Charles Harmon Cagle's look at hidden homosexuality in Montgomery Clift, Errol Flynn, and Tyrone Power, a showcase of Delmas Howe's artwork, a photo spread with model Charley Smith, and Tomm Du Puis's historical examination of Norwegian sailing.
