Playgirl (March 1975)
In response to male-centered magazines such as Playboy, which released its first issue in December of 1953, Playgirl joined the industry in June of 1973 and quickly established itself as a leader in female empowerment, publishing articles on issues of abortion and women's rights. Akin to its Penthouse and Playboy counterparts, Playgirl also featured erotic imagery; however, unlike its male-focused peers, Playgirl's centerfolds were predominately nude men. Due to this factor, the magazine gained a heavy gay readership. The March 1975 issue possesses a running theme of theatrics: interviews with two aspiring actors – Al Cavuoto and David Keith Miller – and a fantasy spread of extraterrestrial love.
