One of the elements which set Blueboy and Mandate apart from their heavy-hitting peers, namely Honcho and Playguy, was their inclusion of articles with intellectual sustenance. The March 1983 issue of Mandate, which centers around a nautical theme, offers that in abundance, from John D’Emilio’s exploration of McCarthyism and homosexuality included in last week’s post to Tomm Du Puis’s historical study of Norwegian sailing contained in next week’s post. The second third of the publication, presented in this week's post, features the short story "Aboard the Fleshen Dagger" (a tale of two men who encounter a wildly erotic adventure while sailing in the Bermuda Triangle), a photo spread with model Mickey Squires, and advertisements for Thoroughbred escorts and Club Baths.
